Sample Chapter 8

What is your idea of a perfect first date? Is it sharing a nice meal and a bottle of wine in cosy surroundings, a quick coffee after work perhaps, a picnic followed by a romantic stroll along the beach? Is it VIP tickets to the big game, or to be whisked away by helicopter to a romantic mountain location, theatre or feeding the ducks, art gallery or finger painting?

JDate asks this as part of the registration process and your answer should be both revealing and realistic. For example, one girl who emailed me recently described her ideal first date location as “The Blue Lagoon in Iceland” – a slightly unrealistic expectation I feel but I’ll see what I can do. Whereas another revealed that “…feeling at ease, laughing a lot and being able to talk for hours” would make her perfect first date.

The description of your ideal first date should bring to light some new characteristic about yourself not already mentioned in your essay, as well as offering some achievable ideas for a first meet. This is your chance to give your prospective date a few hints and tips as to what would really win your heart.

An ideal first date described as “An afternoon walk on the Heath on a beautiful sunny day with plenty of laughing, sharing of stories and flirtatious banter” sounds romantic, fun and importantly, more achievable (weather permitting) than “Oh I don’t know, something spontaneous, something different, an adventure, surprise me”.
